A man died Thursday afternoon after receiving an electric shock while walking through a flooded street in Caborca. During the incident, a State Public Security Police (PESP) officer also suffered an electric shock when trying to assist the victim but managed to escape unharmed.
The events took place at the intersection of 16 and Quiroz y Mora streets, in front of a gas station in the area.
According to preliminary reports, the man was walking through a waterlogged road when he allegedly came into contact with an energized streetlight pole. The water accumulated from recent rains likely conducted the electric current, causing his death at the scene.
Upon noticing the unconscious person in the water, the police officer entered the flooded area to provide aid. However, he also received a strong electric shock and had to retreat to protect himself.
The officer was able to leave the area on his own and did not require serious medical attention.
After confirming the victim had no vital signs, security personnel cordoned off the area to prevent others from entering and risking similar accidents.
Forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) arrived to carry out the necessary procedures and remove the body, which was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).
Technical staff will also inspect the street lighting and wiring in the area to determine the source of the electrical leak.
The State Civil Protection Coordination reiterated its warning to the public to avoid walking or driving through flooded streets during rains due to the risks posed by possible electric currents and other hidden dangers beneath the water.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for safer urban infrastructure and reliable public services, especially in vulnerable communities. As cities like Puebla invest in modern, clean transport options such as cable cars, which reduce street congestion and exposure to hazards, the importance of resilient and well-maintained public utilities becomes even clearer.
