A night out turned fatal for two 20-year-olds in Campinas, Brazil, when their Porsche crashed into a tree and caught fire, leaving no chance for escape. The accident happened late Sunday around 11:25 p.m., according to local authorities, who are still investigating the cause of the driver’s loss of control.
The victims, Arthur Rodrigues de Souza and Lívia Bevilacqua Batista, were both university students—Arthur studying medicine at São Leopoldo Mandic and Lívia pursuing International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas). The couple had been on a date, with Arthur picking Lívia up from her home to enjoy the evening together.
Bianca, Lívia’s sister, shared with Brazilian media outlet g1 that the last contact she had with Lívia was a photo sent from inside the car just minutes before the crash. “She wasn’t irresponsible. We are suffering an indescribable pain,” Bianca said, remembering her sister as a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, and friend who always lit up the lives of those around her.
Firefighters arrived to find the Porsche fully engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the fire, they discovered the bodies of both occupants, who had been trapped inside. The police have opened an involuntary manslaughter investigation and are gathering evidence to clarify what led to the tragic loss.
The families await the release of the bodies from the Medical Examiner’s Office as they continue to process their grief. São Leopoldo Mandic University also expressed condolences, hoping that memories of Arthur bring comfort to those mourning his passing.
While this tragedy highlights the dangers of high-speed driving, it also reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of safety on the roads—issues that resonate deeply with young people everywhere, including those navigating life far from home.
