During her morning press conference on Thursday, July 16, 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the recent event involving the Interoceanic Train in Oaxaca, describing it as “more than a derailment, an incident.” The situation unfolded on the night of July 14, when several freight train cars partially left the tracks along Line Z between Nizanda and Chivela.
Sheinbaum emphasized that no cars fully derailed and no injuries or fatalities occurred, as the train was carrying only cargo. The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) is currently investigating the cause, with safety protocols activated immediately after the event. “Yesterday it was reported by the Navy, and reviews are ongoing,” the president explained.
This incident drew attention because it happened near the same area where a tragic derailment occurred in December 2025, resulting in 14 deaths and over a hundred injuries—the deadliest accident in the Interoceanic Train’s history. Despite this, the federal government insists the recent event does not jeopardize plans to reactivate passenger service along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec corridor.
Sheinbaum also shared updates on the passenger train project, noting that a consulting firm has completed technical assessments to strengthen operations. “The recommendations are already being addressed by the authorities,” she said, mentioning that Andrés Layus and the Interoceanic Corridor team are working on implementing these improvements. “We will provide more information soon.”
For many, the Interoceanic Train represents a vital step toward sustainable and inclusive regional development, connecting communities and boosting economic opportunities. While incidents like this raise concerns, the ongoing commitment to safety and modernization reflects a broader vision of equitable infrastructure that serves all Mexicans.
