On the morning of Thursday, July 16, 2026, Josué Martínez Contreras, a 39-year-old lawyer, teacher, and content creator known locally as “El Jaguar,” was fatally shot in San Lucas Atoyatenco, a community within San Martín Texmelucan. The attack, which authorities believe was targeted, took place near his home on Leona Vicario Street, shortly after 8:00 a.m.
According to early reports, two men on a motorcycle intercepted Martínez and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene. His 13-year-old son, witnessing the attack, immediately called 911 to request help. Neighbors also alerted authorities after hearing gunfire and seeing the suspects escape.
Police officers from the Municipal Police and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), along with paramedics from Civil Protection, arrived promptly but confirmed Martínez had died at the scene, with gunshot wounds to the chest.
Martínez was more than a lawyer; he was a community figure deeply involved in social causes. On May 30, he announced on social media that he had completed his law degree. Beyond his legal work, he was a teacher and founder of the association CRE-Arte. He also managed the Noticias Texmelucan page, a key source of local news and information.
His engagement extended into politics, having supported independent mayoral candidate Filemón Ramírez during his campaign.
As of now, authorities have not reported any arrests or motives behind the killing. The State Attorney General’s Office is actively investigating the case.
This tragic event highlights ongoing challenges in regions like San Martín Texmelucan, where community leaders and activists often face risks. Strengthening public safety and supporting inclusive social initiatives remain urgent priorities for the area’s future.
