Taco Bell under investigation amid unprecedented cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US

A widespread outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic gastrointestinal illness, is affecting most US states, with nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases reported across 34 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday.

This surge, which began in May and continues to grow, marks a significant increase compared to previous years. Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC’s Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, explained that cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite typically transmitted through contaminated food or water—often fresh produce that hasn’t been properly washed or cooked.

Symptoms include explosive diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, and vomiting. The American Medical Association warns that the infection can lead to a recurring syndrome where symptoms disappear and then return.

Michigan, the state with the highest number of cases, suspects contaminated salads and lettuce as the source of infection. Meanwhile, Taco Bell, the nationwide fast-food chain, is also under investigation by health authorities, as reported by The Washington Post.

This outbreak has reignited criticism of last year’s mass layoffs at federal health agencies under the Trump administration, which led to the departure of experts and the reduction of CDC’s foodborne pathogen surveillance networks.

For communities navigating food safety concerns, especially migrants and young adults who rely on quick, affordable meals, this outbreak underscores the importance of vigilance and transparency in food handling practices. As investigations continue, staying informed and cautious about food sources remains crucial.
