The Mexican film industry mourns the loss of Elsa Aguirre, one of its most beloved stars from the Golden Age of cinema. She died on the night of July 14, 2026, at the age of 85.
In the early hours of July 15, her official Facebook page shared the news, describing her as “the most beautiful diva of Mexico’s Golden Age of cinema.” The post revealed she passed away surrounded by love and care in her home in Cuernavaca, Morelos. Fans had recently filled her with messages of affection, and she was delighted to share videos and stories from her remarkable career.
The National Association of Performers (ANDI) expressed deep sorrow over her death, highlighting that Elsa Aguirre was not only a talented actress but also one of the most beautiful faces to grace the big screen. “She was one of the most iconic and emblematic actresses of Mexico’s Golden Age, celebrated for both her dramatic talent and her timeless beauty,” ANDI stated.
Elsa Irma Aguirre Juárez was born on September 25, 1930, in Chihuahua, Mexico, daughter of General Jesús Aguirre and Emma Juárez. Her entry into cinema was serendipitous—at just 14 years old, she won a beauty contest held by CLASA Films Mundiales, which launched her acting career. She debuted alongside her sister Alma Rosa Aguirre in the sci-fi comedy *El sexo fuerte* (1945).
Her first starring role came in 1946 with director Julio Bracho’s *Don Simón de Lira*, acting alongside Joaquín Pardavé. Over her career, she appeared in more than 50 films spanning genres from drama to comedy. Notable works include *La mujer que yo amé* (1950), *Cuidado con el amor* (1954) with Pedro Infante, *Lluvia roja* (1950) alongside Jorge Negrete, and *Algo flota sobre el agua* (1948) with Arturo de Córdova.
In 2003, the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences honored her with the Ariel Award for Lifetime Achievement, recognizing her fundamental contribution to Mexican cinema.
Elsa Aguirre’s legacy remains a shining example of Mexico’s rich cultural history, inspiring new generations of artists and cinephiles alike.
