Local deputy Delfina Pozos Vergara from the PRI party has formally requested the presence of Puebla’s Secretary of Tourism Development, Carla López-Malo Villalón, before the state Congress. The goal is to clarify the actions, supervision mechanisms, and safety protocols applied following the tragic event in the Chichicazapan caves in Cuetzalan, where four members of the Peña family lost their lives.

Pozos Vergara emphasized the urgent need for transparency about how tourism agencies and service providers—especially those involved in adventure tourism—are monitored. The tragedy, which unfolded during a guided tour, exposed serious gaps in oversight. “People in Puebla deserve to know exactly what happened in Cuetzalan. It’s unacceptable that weather conditions weren’t anticipated, and even more alarming that the tour guide wasn’t officially registered. Why are unaccredited individuals allowed to lead visitors and put them at such risk?” she questioned.

The deputy also called for clarity on the legal status of the agency responsible for the tour, questioning whether it held the proper permits and complied with regulations for adventure tourism activities. This demand follows statements from the state’s Secretary of Governance, Samuel Aguilar Pala, who confirmed that the guide lacked an official license.

Pozos Vergara insists that the Congress must review existing safety and monitoring plans for Puebla’s adventure tourism zones and push the Tourism Development Secretariat to implement stronger measures to prevent future tragedies. She reaffirmed her commitment to promoting transparency and accountability among public officials, stressing that citizens have the right to know the responsibilities and actions the state government will take after the Cuetzalan incident.

This call for accountability comes amid growing discussions on how to balance Puebla’s rich natural attractions with the need for safe, regulated tourism—an issue that resonates deeply with communities and visitors alike.
