Rescue efforts are ongoing in the Grutas de Chichicazapan, located in Cuetzalan del Progreso, as authorities work to locate three people still trapped inside the cave system. The municipality’s president, Óscar Paula Cruz, confirmed that while more belongings linked to the missing individuals have been discovered, the three remain unaccounted for.

The incident unfolded after heavy rains in Puebla’s Sierra Nororiental caused a sudden rise in the underground river’s water level, trapping the group inside the caves. This natural event highlights the risks of adventure tourism in such fragile environments, especially when weather conditions change rapidly.

So far, three people have been rescued alive: Conrado Vázquez Islas, a tour guide; Aracely Antonio Peña, 40; and Agustín Julián Benito, who managed to escape on his own to seek help. Tragically, Gerardo Julián de los Santos, 31, was found deceased.

The three still missing are Jazmín Lisbeth Peña Antonio, 20; Karime Antonio Peña, 24; and Ismael Peña, 40. Rescue operations continue despite challenging conditions caused by strong water currents and the complex cave system.

Mayor Paula Cruz emphasized that the priority remains finding the missing individuals and that rescue work is coordinated with emergency services. He also noted that the company responsible for the tourist activity inside the caves will be investigated to determine if any irregularities contributed to the accident.

For communities and visitors alike, this event underscores the importance of safety protocols and responsible tourism, especially in natural sites that require specialized infrastructure and oversight. As rescue teams push forward, families wait anxiously for news, hoping for a safe resolution.
