Tyler passed away unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness, her family announced on Thursday, July 9, 2026, via a statement on her official website. She had been hospitalized in May in Faro, where she owned a home, for emergency intestinal surgery.

Although she was placed in an induced coma, reports from last month indicated she was improving and expected to recover well. However, her family shared that she died suddenly the night before at the hospital due to complications from the illness she was being treated for.

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a working-class family in Skewen, Wales, just 11 kilometers from Swansea. The daughter of a coal miner, she was raised in public housing with an outdoor bathroom, alongside three sisters and two brothers.

Her love for music began early, inspired by The Beatles and fueled by her first album, “A Hard Day’s Night.” At 13, she bought her first single, “Hippy Hippy Shake” by The Swinging Blue Jeans, and religiously watched “Top of the Pops.” She recorded the show on a two-track reel-to-reel tape recorder and meticulously wrote down lyrics from artists she admired, including Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, and Otis Redding.

Tyler recalled in her memoir, *Straight From the Heart*, how she would sing along to these songs for hours with a hairbrush as a microphone, discovering her distinctive raspy voice early on but never thinking much of it. “I fell in love with singing just by doing that,” she wrote.
