Landslide Hits Veracruz’s Viviendas del Bienestar Amid Heavy Rains: What You Need to Know

Post by usertopnews

Heavy rains overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday caused a landslide spanning over 50 meters in the Viviendas del Bienestar area, located in the Bosques de Río Medio subdivision in northern Veracruz city. The affected zone, specifically around Río Guadalquivir and Río Amazonas streets, saw water runoff flowing toward the Bosques de Río Medio neighborhood.

The homes impacted are still under construction, nearing their final stages before delivery. Residents of Bosques de Río Medio report this is the third time they have experienced damage linked to the Viviendas del Bienestar project, as water and mud runoff have repeatedly affected their properties. The most severe damage is at a corner house where walls have become damp from the water, with mud and water levels reaching up to 50 centimeters. Neighbors express concern over the need for a retaining wall to prevent further damage.

This housing initiative, aimed at workers earning between one and two minimum wages, includes a total of 1,040 homes. Earlier this year, in January, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo delivered the first 200 houses under this program. According to Infonavit, over 60% of these homes are already occupied, though construction continues to complete the entire development.

Following the landslide on Wednesday, construction crews have mobilized on-site with around 100 workers and heavy machinery to repair the damage and stabilize the area.

This incident highlights the challenges of rapid housing development in vulnerable zones but also underscores the ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing solutions. As the project progresses, integrating infrastructure like retaining walls and sustainable drainage will be crucial to protect both new and existing communities.
