Oscar Edmundo Aguayo Arredondo, a former Morena councilor and ex-advisor to Morena deputies in Guanajuato, was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife, Celia Carolina Valadez Beltrán, who currently serves as a Morena councilor in the Guanajuato city council.
The incident unfolded in the La Venada neighborhood, where municipal security officers responded to reports of a man attacking his wife inside a vehicle. According to the Guanajuato Municipal Security Secretariat, officers heard a child shouting that his father was hitting his mother. Around ten bystanders gathered at the scene, accusing Aguayo of assaulting Valadez in front of the child.
When officers asked the couple to exit the vehicle, Celia Carolina stated she did not require medical attention. However, Aguayo reportedly became aggressive and attempted to physically confront the officers, leading to his detention. Both Celia Carolina and the minor were taken to social work services for referral to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
This case adds to a controversial history surrounding Aguayo. On March 27, 2025, the Guanajuato Congress urged the National Electoral Institute (INE) to review Aguayo’s candidacy for magistrate of the Sixteenth Circuit due to a prior fraud case involving 237,000 pesos against the state legislature.
Between 2015 and 2018, Aguayo served as an advisor to Alejandro Landeros, the first Morena deputy in Guanajuato. During this time, he allegedly exploited his position to divert public funds through false invoices and forged signatures. According to PAN deputies, Aguayo established ghost companies by illegally registering former university colleagues with the tax authority (SAT) to issue fraudulent invoices and embezzle money from the state Congress.
In a desperate attempt to avoid prosecution, Aguayo reportedly offered 50,000 pesos to the local Congress to silence the case, an offer that was firmly rejected. The legal process concluded on March 16, 2022, when Aguayo signed a reparations agreement to reimburse 273,000 pesos to the Congress through four scheduled payments.
This recent arrest highlights ongoing challenges in political accountability and domestic violence, issues that resonate deeply with communities advocating for justice and equality in Mexico.
