On Wednesday, the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) announced it has opened new investigations related to the arrest of “El Mayo” in the United States.
During a press conference, FGR head Ernestina Godoy revealed concerns over a possible secret agreement between Ovidio Guzmán and U.S. authorities that allegedly facilitated a change in Guzmán’s precautionary measures. This arrangement reportedly allowed 17 of his family members to enter the U.S.
Godoy also accused former U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar of denying American agencies’ involvement in the capture of the Sinaloa Cartel leader. However, a recent investigative report indicates that the FBI was behind the operation.
“These developments suggest three serious issues: multiple violations of Mexican and international law, an unlawful pact, and a diplomatic lie,” Godoy stated. She emphasized that such actions breach the fundamental principle of good faith in diplomatic relations, as established in various international treaties.
This case highlights ongoing tensions in cross-border law enforcement and diplomacy, raising questions about transparency and accountability in handling high-profile cartel figures. For communities affected by cartel violence and migration, these revelations underscore the complex interplay between justice, diplomacy, and human rights.
