Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, one of the most notorious leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, has formally accepted a life sentence in the United States, according to a legal filing submitted on Monday, July 6, 2026, by his defense team in a federal court in New York.

The letter, addressed to Judge Brian M. Cogan of the Eastern District of New York, confirms that Zambada pleaded guilty fully aware that the legal consequence would be life imprisonment.
