Claudia Sheinbaum urges responsible celebration ahead of Mexico vs. England match on July 5

As Mexico prepares to face England this Sunday, July 5, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is calling on fans to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the importance of avoiding large crowds. Speaking on July 3 at the 12th Infantry Battalion of the 21st Military Zone, Sheinbaum expressed confidence in Mexico’s victory but stressed that individual responsibility is key to preventing incidents like those seen after recent celebrations, which tragically resulted in four deaths.

Sheinbaum highlighted that, beyond government security measures, each person must do their part to avoid dangerous overcrowding. Following instructions from Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, additional screens will be installed along Reforma Avenue to disperse crowds away from the iconic Angel of Independence monument. Screens will be placed at nearly every roundabout, accompanied by clear signage indicating entry and exit points to help manage the flow of people.

“We must all be very responsible and avoid areas where authorities have already warned of large gatherings,” Sheinbaum said, urging fans to celebrate safely.

On the security front, Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, confirmed that Mexico City police will lead a strong coordinated operation to maintain order during the match. He noted ongoing discussions with city officials to implement measures aimed at preventing incidents similar to those that occurred last Tuesday.

While acknowledging the challenges of managing millions of enthusiastic fans, García Harfuch emphasized that most celebrations have gone smoothly. He assured that new strategies will be announced soon, possibly even on match day, to ensure public safety.

For Mexican migrants and international residents in Mexico, this call for responsible celebration is a reminder of the collective role everyone plays in public safety, especially during major national events. The city’s efforts to expand viewing areas and improve crowd management reflect a commitment to inclusive, safe public spaces where diverse communities can come together to enjoy the game.
