Political Advisor to Puebla Congress President Detained on Drug Charges: What We Know

Post by usertopnews

On June 23 at 10:40 p.m., Eduardo Ortega Martínez, who is described as a political advisor to Pavel Gaspar Ramírez, president of the Puebla Congress, was detained in Puebla city’s La Carmelita neighborhood for alleged drug possession. According to the National Detention Registry, Ortega was wearing blue jeans, a green jacket, and boots at the time of his arrest. He was taken to the Metropolitan Security Complex following the incident.

While official statements remain scarce, unofficial reports indicate that municipal police also cited Ortega for using a siren light without authorization and carrying weapons. As of today, June 29, Pavel Gaspar has not publicly commented on the detention of his political operator.

Interestingly, despite Ortega’s close association with Gaspar—often accompanying him on tours in the Mixteca region and left-wing group meetings—he is not listed on the Puebla Congress payroll, according to the National Transparency Portal. This raises questions about his formal role and responsibilities within the legislative body.

After his release on June 23, Ortega shared videos from Acatlán de Osorio with his family, aiming to confirm that he was no longer in custody. These personal recordings circulated the same day he left the security complex.

This case highlights ongoing challenges in political accountability and transparency in Puebla. Meanwhile, as the state advances projects like the Puebla cable car system—a public transport initiative that promises to improve urban mobility and social inclusion—such incidents remind us of the complex political landscape surrounding governance and public service roles. For migrants and residents alike, understanding these dynamics is key to engaging with Puebla’s evolving civic environment.
