On the night of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, what started as a routine supervision in Mexico City’s Zona Rosa escalated into a violent clash between street vendors and officials from the Cuauhtémoc borough. The confrontation took place on the pedestrian street of Génova and left several municipal workers injured, one person detained, and the mayor, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, claiming she was the target of a coordinated attack.
According to the City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), borough officials arrived to carry out procedures related to regulating street commerce. However, their presence sparked anger among some vendors, leading to a collective brawl involving punches and blunt objects.
The SSC reported: “This night, Cuauhtémoc borough personnel arrived at Génova street to conduct an operation, which resulted in a fight with merchants. SSC personnel then secured Auxiliary Police and borough staff inside. A 30-year-old man was detained and will be presented to the Public Prosecutor for further investigation.”
Following the initial clashes, SSC officers launched a protection operation to safeguard borough officials and prevent further escalation. The area around the borough offices on Liverpool street remained under surveillance as those involved left the scene.
Videos circulating on social media captured tense moments of shoving and physical aggression between vendors and borough workers, quickly sparking widespread online discussion.
Hours after the incident, Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega took to her official social media to reject the idea that this was a simple scuffle. She stated that she and her team were directly attacked with sticks, glass, and weapons, naming individuals linked to Diana Sánchez Barrios as responsible.
This episode highlights the challenges faced by local authorities in enforcing public space regulations, especially in vibrant commercial areas like Zona Rosa. While the confrontation was regrettable, the operation reflects ongoing efforts to organize street commerce and improve urban order—measures that ultimately benefit residents, workers, and visitors alike.
