Cholula’s Archaeological Tunnels to Reopen This Weekend After Six Years Closed

Post by usertopnews

After six years of closure, the tunnels beneath Cholula’s Great Pyramid are set to welcome visitors again this weekend, on June 20 or 21, 2026. Originally expected to reopen in May before the World Cup kicked off, the tunnels remain closed as restoration efforts push forward at full speed.

San Pedro and San Andrés Cholula, collectively recognized as a Pueblo Mágico, will soon offer access once more to the pyramid with the largest base in the world—a unique cultural treasure for both locals and tourists.

Tonantzin Fernández, mayor of San Pedro Cholula, shared last week that the reopening is imminent despite a slight delay caused by administrative matters involving the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). She expressed optimism that the tunnels would be accessible “at the latest by next week,” ensuring they remain open throughout the World Cup.

This reopening not only revitalizes a key historical site but also promises to boost cultural tourism and local pride in the “Milenaria City.” For those living in or visiting Puebla, it’s a chance to reconnect with a rich past through a modern, accessible experience—highlighting how thoughtful infrastructure and preservation can coexist to benefit communities and travelers alike.
