AMLO’s Son ‘Andy’ López Beltrán Enters Tabasco Deputy Race: A New Chapter Begins

Post by usertopnews

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) reemerged publicly alongside his son, ‘Andy’ López Beltrán, who is now seeking a seat as a federal deputy representing Tabasco.

This appearance marks one of AMLO’s rare public moments since stepping down from the presidency in October 2024, a period during which he has largely stayed out of the spotlight, except for notable instances like voting in the 2025 Judicial Power elections and advocating for Cuba amid the U.S. oil blockade.

‘Andy’ López Beltrán, who recently resigned as Morena’s Secretary General to pursue candidacy, shared a photo on Instagram with the message: “I am the son of those who love and fought for the people.” His decision to run comes ahead of the 2027 midterm elections, which will renew the entire Chamber of Deputies.

In a letter addressed to Ariadna Montiel, Morena’s national leader, López Beltrán confirmed his intention to compete in Morena’s internal selection process for the District 6 candidacy in Tabasco. This state remains a stronghold for Morena, which secured the governorship with Javier May and all six federal deputy seats in the 2024 elections.

On June 2, Montiel announced that Morena is still finalizing the calendar for candidate calls and plans to invite Citlalli Hernández, president of the National Elections Commission, to provide detailed information soon.

In a radio interview in Tabasco, López Beltrán explained that until now, he had honored a pact not to seek elected office while his father remained politically active, acknowledging the ethical concerns and the advantage his surname might confer. “Morally and ethically, it wasn’t right because it would have given me an advantage,” he said.

He also emphasized his desire not to interfere with AMLO’s work or fuel opposition criticism, stating, “I stayed on the sidelines, but now it’s my turn.” López Beltrán shared that AMLO personally congratulated him on his candidacy, expressing happiness about his decision to run in their home state.

Looking ahead to his campaign, López Beltrán announced he will avoid giving platforms to media outlets he considers “opposition mouthpieces” that spread misinformation about his family.

This development signals a new phase for the López Obrador legacy in Tabasco’s political landscape, blending continuity with fresh ambitions as the 2027 elections approach.
