Mexico’s President Calls for National Debate on Children’s Use of Social Media and Cell Phones

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum sparked a national conversation about regulating the use of social media, digital platforms, and cell phones among minors. Speaking from the National Palace, she emphasized the need to involve parents in shaping policies around these technologies, especially in primary schools.

Sheinbaum revealed that she has asked Mario Delgado, head of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), to conduct a consultation with parents about the impact of social media and cell phone use in elementary schools. This follows actions already taken in Mexico City and some other states, where cell phone use in primary schools has been banned.

“The City of Mexico and some states have prohibited cell phones in primary schools. I asked Mario Delgado to consult with parents about what this means in terms of artificial intelligence, platforms, and social networks, to hear their opinions,” she said.

The president stressed that regulation is inevitable: “There has to come a time when it is regulated.” She also referenced Pope Leo XIV’s call for reflection on this issue and noted that countries like Brazil have already banned “scrolling” on social media.

Sheinbaum highlighted the risks of excessive screen time, linking it to anxiety and other problems. “You can’t live glued to the phone,” she said. “From very early on, children are given screens, and that creates problems later. Social activity and learning should remain distinct from just screen time.”

By opening this discussion at a national level, Sheinbaum aims to promote transparency and reduce the influence of powerful tech corporations over young users. For migrant families and young adults navigating digital life in Mexico and abroad, this debate could shape how future generations engage with technology in healthier, more balanced ways.
