Uruapan’s Cable Car Surpasses Half a Million Riders in First Month Despite Initial Doubts

Post by usertopnews

In its first 30 days of operation, Uruapan’s new cable car system has transported an impressive 515,557 passengers across its six stations—significantly outnumbering the city’s population of 367,000. This milestone highlights the strong acceptance of this innovative public transit option among both locals and tourists.

During the weekly press conference on Friday, May 29, 2026, Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla shared updates alongside Gladyz Butanda Macías, head of the Secretariat of Urban Development and Mobility (Sedum). Butanda revealed that approximately 18,000 people use the cable car daily to reach homes, workplaces, and schools.

Key details from the report include:
– Peak usage occurs between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., when many residents of the “Pearl of Cupatitzio” commute.
– Operational and maintenance costs for the first month totaled 6,466,775 pesos, with 1,512,994 pesos paid to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

To reduce energy expenses, Sedum is negotiating with the State Water and Watershed Management Commission (CEAC) to power the cable car using water from the Francisco J. Múgica Dam. This shift could cut electricity costs by nearly 50%, from 1.5 million to around 750,000 pesos monthly.

Governor Ramírez Bedolla also announced plans to offer advertising space on the cable car to businesses and individuals, with proceeds earmarked to cover ongoing operational costs.

For a city of Uruapan’s size, the cable car’s rapid adoption signals a promising step toward sustainable, inclusive urban mobility—one that blends public service with innovative energy solutions and community engagement.
