On Thursday, May 28, 2026, Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, firmly dismissed any presidential ambitions for 2030. In an interview with journalist Azucena Uresti on Radio Fórmula, García Harfuch made it clear that his current priority remains his security portfolio under President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration.
When asked about rumors positioning him as a strong Morena contender for the 2030 presidential race, he responded bluntly: “Yes, I rule it out because I am Secretary of Security.” He emphasized that given the critical security challenges facing Mexico, he is fully committed to his current role and does not envision pursuing other political goals at this time.
“A Secretary of Security cannot think of anything other than being Secretary of Security until the lady president decides otherwise,” he stated.
García Harfuch’s remarks come amid rising political and media prominence since his tenure as head of Mexico City’s Security Secretariat during Claudia Sheinbaum’s mayoralty. In 2023, he sought Morena’s candidacy for Mexico City’s Head of Government but lost to Clara Brugada. Despite this, he remains one of the most competitive and well-positioned figures in polls, especially among middle-class and young voters.
Beyond politics, García Harfuch has become a digital and media phenomenon. His sober style and “elite police” image resonate strongly on social platforms like TikTok and X, where he frequently trends, particularly among young women.
This blend of popularity, close ties to President Sheinbaum, and national visibility as the federal security chief has fueled speculation about his long-term political future. Yet, García Harfuch insists his focus is on public security, a critical issue as the government aims to strengthen efforts against organized crime and reduce violence across Mexico.
Currently, he is considered one of the most visible and supported members of the federal cabinet, playing a key role in the administration’s security strategy.
