A video circulating on social media has captured the moment a geyser suddenly erupted in the middle of a house in Ixtlán, a municipality in the state of Michoacán, leaving both neighbors and online viewers astonished.
The footage, shared by users including Alfonso Herrera Trejo on X, shows the geyser emerging from the patio of a home in the community of El Salitre, Ixtlán. The unexpected natural phenomenon took residents and their neighbors by surprise, as no one anticipated witnessing such an event in their own backyard.
According to local media reports, while no people were injured during the incident, some farm animals were affected by the geyser’s sudden appearance.
In response, the Government of Ixtlán announced on its official social media channels that Civil Protection personnel were dispatched to the site to “safeguard the integrity of the inhabitants of the property” where the geyser appeared, as well as their neighbors and domestic animals in the area. Authorities also confirmed that the activity of this new geyser has been reported to Michoacán state officials to coordinate efforts and assess its nature and potential risks.
Residents have been urged to stay away from the site and to report any further risks in the area to Civil Protection at 351 279 2639. The government emphasized: “We ask you to take precautions and stay tuned only to official communications, which we will continue to share through this channel.”
What exactly is a geyser, and why did this happen in Michoacán?
– According to experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the word “geyser” comes from the French “geisa” (to gush) and the Icelandic “geisir,” which refers to springs that intermittently erupt.
– Geysers are natural phenomena where a special system of underground heating and venting causes columns of water and steam to be expelled with great force, sometimes reaching up to 60 meters high.
– The process is marked by a loud, explosive noise as the steam and water are released, followed by a period of calm—giving geysers their characteristic intermittent activity.
– These eruptions are typically found in areas with volcanic activity and tectonic movement, where magma heats underground water and creates thermal springs.
For Michoacán’s residents—many of whom have roots in regions shaped by volcanic activity—this event is a reminder of the dynamic forces beneath the earth’s surface. For migrants and expats with ties to the area, it’s a striking example of how natural phenomena can disrupt daily life and highlight the importance of community response and official guidance.
As authorities continue to monitor the situation, the community of El Salitre and the broader Ixtlán municipality are being called to remain vigilant and prioritize safety, while experts work to better understand the risks and origins of this rare event.
