What began as a raid on a single house with armed men quickly revealed a sprawling complex of interconnected properties used for drug production, weapons storage, and money laundering.

The operation, which extended through Thursday, May 28, resulted in the arrest of eight men, including two Mexican nationals. Authorities seized a staggering arsenal: 15 assault rifles, three 9mm pistols, over a thousand rounds of ammunition, multiple radios, cell phones, and digital storage devices. They also confiscated luxury assets such as three Friesian horses, 22 vehicles, three ATVs, and seven motorcycles.

Financially, the haul was equally significant, with $136,000 in cash found hidden in a secret compartment, alongside nearly $27,000 and 74,461 quetzales (about $9,774 USD) in other bags. Video footage released by President Bernardo Arévalo’s government shows soldiers inspecting the lab, filled with cocaine production materials and containers of white powder yet to be processed. A helicopter hovered overhead to secure the perimeter and prevent armed retaliation.

This criminal network operates transnationally, moving drugs through Chiapas, Mexico, into various parts of the country while distributing within Central America. Guatemala’s Public Ministry emphasized ongoing investigations to map out the full extent of the network and its connections. The government framed the operation as part of broader efforts to strengthen security and territorial control along the porous border region.

The discovery comes amid increased pressure from the United States on Central American and Mexican authorities to dismantle drug trafficking structures operating from the south. Recent seizures in 2026 at key ports—San José, Puerto Quetzal, and Puerto Chiapas—highlight the intensifying battle against organized crime in the region.

San Lorenzo’s strategic location has made it a hotspot for illicit activities, including drug trafficking and migrant smuggling. Residents describe the area as controlled by criminal groups, with direct links to Mexican border communities. This environment of violence was underscored by a brutal incident on February 5, when three men, including a Mexican citizen from Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas, were found tortured and killed nearby.

Following the raid, Guatemala’s military has reinforced security along the Chiapas border, deploying armed vehicles and troops to maintain control. Meanwhile, investigations continue to uncover the full scope of this blow against organized crime, signaling a critical moment in the fight for safer, more just border communities.

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Guatemalan military and police launched a major operation in the community of Zanjón San Lorenzo, just 25 kilometers from the Mexican border, uncovering the largest drug laboratory in the last decade and a half.
