What started as a routine jog turned tragic when she was attacked by seven unleashed dogs belonging to a local shepherd, Pedro G., 60, who used the area to graze his sheep. Arancha managed to call her mother during the attack, describing the assault before succumbing to more than 100 bite wounds inflicted by the animals.

The dogs—three mastiffs, two German shepherds, and two puppies—were known in the community for frequently disturbing walkers, athletes, and locals on the rural paths around Roales del Pan and nearby La Hiniesta, where Pedro G. kept his livestock. The shepherd was not present at the time of the attack, which prosecutors argue could have prevented the fatal incident.

The case, now before the Zamora Criminal Court, begins this Thursday, May 28, 2026. The Public Prosecutor’s Office demands two and a half years in prison, while Arancha’s family seeks four years and €250,000 in compensation for negligent homicide. Authorities emphasize that Pedro G. failed to control his potentially dangerous dogs, which were neither leashed nor confined.

The Civil Guard took charge of the investigation immediately after the attack. They found Arancha lifeless on the path, despite emergency teams’ efforts to save her. The dogs were seized and later euthanized at a specialized center in Simancas, Valladolid. Pedro G. was arrested but refused to testify. Initially held in provisional detention due to the risk of repeating such behavior, he was later released pending trial.

Local testimonies paint a grim picture: neighbors recall multiple incidents where the shepherd’s dogs harassed or even killed other pets and caused fear among residents and visitors. “It was only a matter of time,” one villager said, highlighting the ongoing risks posed by the uncontrolled pack.

This trial will examine the shepherd’s responsibility to keep his animals under control, especially given the history of problems and the fatal consequences of his negligence. Witnesses, including the Civil Guard officers who responded to the scene and forensic experts, are expected to testify. The case underscores the importance of responsible animal management and the protection of public safety in rural communities.

On October 24, 2023, Arancha C., a 27-year-old nursing assistant from Roales del Pan, Spain, went out for a run with her dog near her hometown of about 1,000 residents.
