According to official figures, nearly 2.5 million people are visited at home each month to be incorporated into the new scheme.

One of the most significant announcements is universal emergency care. As explained by Deputy Health Secretary Eduardo Clark, anyone with the credential will be able to go to the nearest hospital in an emergency—regardless of whether it’s an IMSS, ISSSTE, or IMSS-Bienestar clinic—and remain there until stabilized.

Officials argue this will be key to reducing deaths from heart attacks and strokes, which are among the leading causes of death in the country.

Another promised change is the portability of medical records. Under the new model, a person diagnosed at one institution can continue treatment at another without repeating tests or starting a new diagnostic process. This aims to solve a real problem for those who move cities or change jobs and experience interruptions in their care.

How to register

The Mexican government, through the Welfare and Health Secretariats, has released the official calendar for registering for the Universal Health Service Credential. Registration is organized by the first letter of your paternal surname and will remain open until November 14. The process takes place during the first, second, third, and fourth weeks of each month, depending on your surname’s initial.

Here’s how it works:

First and third weeks: Surnames A-L

– Mondays (A, B): June 1 & 15; July 6 & 20; August 3 & 17; September 7 & 21; October 5 & 19; November 2 & 9
– Tuesdays (C): June 2 & 16; July 7 & 21; August 4 & 18; September 8 & 22; October 6 & 20; November 3 & 10
– Wednesdays (D, E, F): June 3 & 17; July 8 & 22; August 5 & 19; September 9 & 23; October 7 & 21; November 4 & 11
– Thursdays (G): June 4 & 18; July 9 & 23; August 6 & 20; September 10 & 24; October 8 & 22; November 5 & 12
– Fridays (H, I, J, K, L): June 5 & 19; July 10 & 24; August 7 & 21; September 11 & 25; October 9 & 23; November 6 & 13
– Saturdays for latecomers: June 6 & 20; July 11 & 25; August 8 & 22; September 12 & 26; October 10 & 24; November 7 & 14

Second and fourth weeks: Surnames M-Z

– Mondays (M): June 8 & 22; July 13 & 27; August 10 & 24; September 14 & 28; October 12 & 26
– Tuesdays (N, Ñ, O, P, Q): June 9 & 23; July 14 & 28; August 11 & 25; September 15 & 29; October 13 & 27
– Wednesdays (R): June 10 & 24; July 15 & 29; August 12 & 26; September 16 & 30; October 14 & 28
– Thursdays (S, T, U): June 11 &

Starting January 1, 2027, Mexico’s healthcare system will operate under a new rule: affiliation with a specific institution will no longer be a barrier to receiving care.
