Speaking at a mass event in Managua commemorating the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution, Ortega declared that there will be no more elections that could threaten his regime’s grip on power.

“Aquí (en Nicaragua) no volverán a haber elecciones para que por allí intenten ellos (oposición) atrapar el gobierno, atrapar el poder,” he said, accusing opposition forces—many of whom are in exile—of trying to “trap the government” for their own gain.

Ortega’s rule, alongside his wife Rosario Murillo since 2017, has been marked by allegations of electoral fraud and systematic elimination of political competition. Murillo, who was vice president since 2017, was elevated to the newly created role of “copresident” in February 2025 through a constitutional reform that centralized power in the executive branch.

This reform, which came into effect in early 2025, dismantled the balance of powers by renaming state branches and granting Ortega and Murillo near-absolute authority. It also extended the presidential term from five to six years and postponed the next general elections from November 2026 to November 2027. Critics including the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the European Parliament, and Nicaraguan opposition groups have condemned these changes as a blatant power grab.

In his speech, Ortega vowed to work with the National Assembly—widely seen as a rubber-stamp body—to pass laws that would block “golpistas” (coup plotters) and “vendepatrias” (traitors), regardless of any financial support they might receive from the United States.

The U.S. State Department has been vocal in its criticism, accusing Murillo of inventing the “copresident” position without electoral legitimacy and condemning the couple for denying Nicaraguans their democratic right to vote. In January 2026, the department stated that Ortega and Murillo “cowardly” suppress democracy because they know they cannot win in a free election.

For migrants and international observers invested in democracy and human rights, Ortega’s announcement signals a deepening authoritarianism that undermines political pluralism and civil liberties in Nicaragua. The country’s trajectory contrasts sharply with inclusive governance models and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those advocating for democratic reforms in the region.

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Daniel Ortega, Nicaragua’s president since 2007, delivered a stark message that effectively ends any hope for democratic alternation in the country.
