According to the recently released Environmental Impact Manifest (MIA), the cable car system is expected to eliminate 18,507 tons of CO2 emissions each year, reducing vehicular pollution by 4.22% within its service area in Puebla’s capital.

This low-emission transport alternative stands out for not producing direct greenhouse gases, positioning it as a key player in the city’s efforts to combat air pollution. The MIA, titled “Regional Environmental Impact Manifestation, Integral Project for the Construction of a Cable Transport System in Puebla Municipality,” was prepared by Dr. Rafael Villegas Patraca from the Institute of Ecology A.C. (Inecol).

The study takes a comprehensive look at Puebla’s physical environment—air, water, flora, and fauna—alongside socioeconomic factors, population dynamics, cultural heritage, and urban landscape quality. It highlights that the project will affect only 77 trees, all of which are slated for careful transplantation and compensation, ensuring minimal disruption to local greenery.

Importantly, the cable system’s route avoids pristine ecosystems and protected natural areas, focusing instead on urban zones with mostly secondary or non-native vegetation. While the project will be visible across 132 square kilometers—about 68% of the area around Puebla and San Andrés Cholula stations—the MIA acknowledges the city’s current low landscape quality and proposes mitigation measures such as visual restoration, landscape integration, and new green spaces, especially near stations.

The environmental analysis also flags potential risks to local bird populations, noting 814 individual birds from 78 species inhabit the affected areas. To reduce collision risks with the cable infrastructure, the report recommends protective measures including:

– Monitoring for active nests before tree work begins
– Establishing exclusion zones around nests
– Avoiding unnecessary nighttime construction
– Using downward-directed, low-attraction lighting during operations
– Installing high-visibility cable markers and clear signage
– Training staff on wildlife protection protocols

Beyond environmental benefits, the Cablebús is expected to lower road maintenance costs, reduce traffic congestion, and decrease noise pollution, contributing to a more livable urban environment.

As Puebla moves forward with this innovative transport solution, the project exemplifies how urban development can align with ecological responsibility—offering a cleaner, more inclusive future for the city’s residents.

The upcoming Cablebús project in Puebla promises to be a game-changer for urban mobility and environmental sustainability.
