In response, the UN has procured 10,000 body bags in coordination with Venezuelan authorities, preparing for a potentially larger death toll, though they hope the final count will be lower. Additionally, the UN estimates that up to 50,000 people remain missing.

“We are definitely talking about a number higher than the official reports. As an indicator, we are acquiring 10,000 body bags, which is an agreement with local authorities,” Rampolla said.

The seismic activity continues to unsettle Venezuelans. On the morning of Monday, June 29, a new 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck northern Venezuela, reigniting fears of further damage just five days after the twin quakes that caused the initial devastation. This latest tremor, with a depth of 10 kilometers and an epicenter 27 kilometers north of Caraballeda in La Guaira—the state hardest hit by the June 24 earthquakes—forced many residents to evacuate their homes once again.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude as 4.6, while Venezuela’s own Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) measured it slightly lower at 4.2.

Despite the renewed shaking, Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s Parliament, assured via Telegram that no new damage has been reported anywhere in the country following this latest event.

Feliciano de Santis, president of the Venezuelan Society of Geologists and professor at the Central University of Venezuela, explained that aftershocks are expected as part of the tectonic adjustment process. In an interview with Venezuelan outlet Efecto Cocuyo, he warned that “many more aftershocks” are likely in the coming weeks, noting that over 200 aftershocks have already been recorded since June 24.

Drawing from four decades of experience, de Santis compared the current situation to the 1989 Boca del Tocuyo earthquake, which saw over 3,200 aftershocks spanning about two months. “This is the same tectonic zone,” he emphasized.

For those living in Venezuela or connected to the country, understanding the ongoing seismic risks is crucial. The UN’s proactive steps, including the purchase of body bags, underscore the severity of the crisis and the need for continued vigilance and support.

Venezuela’s official death toll from the devastating earthquakes on June 24 stands at 1,719, but the United Nations warns this figure likely underestimates the true scale of the tragedy.
