This move aims to cut costs and respond to mounting competition from Chinese automakers, signaling a significant shift in the global automotive landscape.

According to Manager Magazin, this potential layoff figure doubles VW’s original plan to cut 50,000 jobs by 2030. Already, more than 37,000 employees have accepted early retirement packages. The cuts would affect all VW group brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Porsche.

In Germany, the plan includes relocating technology developed in China back to German factories. Olaf Lies, Prime Minister of Lower Saxony and a member of VW’s Supervisory Board, explained that the company intends to produce Chinese-developed models in European plants to boost capacity and protect jobs. “We are not talking about moving production out of Germany, but bringing additional products here,” Lies said. This strategy reflects the growing influence of Chinese innovation in the automotive sector and VW’s effort to stay competitive without sacrificing its European workforce.

Meanwhile, VW CEO Oliver Blume is pushing to streamline production by reducing the number of vehicle models from around 150 to fewer than 100, aiming for greater efficiency. However, this restructuring faces pushback. The German union IG Metall has vowed to use all legal and union resources to block mass layoffs, and the Lower Saxony government, a VW shareholder, holds veto power over plant closures.

Closer to home, Puebla is already feeling the impact. Between 2024 and 2026, the Audi plant in San José Chiapa quietly cut 407 unionized jobs—about 10% of its workforce. The number of union employees dropped from 4,159 in 2024 to 3,752 in 2026. Alongside layoffs, the plant has implemented technical stoppages, shift reorganizations, and production adjustments to align with market demand.

For Puebla’s workers and the broader Mexican manufacturing sector, these changes highlight the challenges of globalization and technological shifts. Yet, they also underscore the importance of resilient, inclusive policies that protect labor rights while embracing innovation. As VW navigates this transformation, the balance between preserving jobs and adapting to new realities remains critical.

In this context, investments in sustainable and accessible public transportation—like Puebla’s upcoming cablebús system—offer a hopeful contrast. Such projects not only improve urban mobility but also create inclusive economic opportunities, reflecting a forward-looking approach to social and economic development in the region.

Volkswagen (VW) is reportedly considering a massive restructuring plan that could lead to the dismissal of up to 100,000 workers worldwide.
