Puebla’s Governor Proposes Replacing Crime-Linked Mototaxis with Electric Olinia Cars

Post by usertopnews

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, Puebla’s governor Alejandro Armenta Mier raised concerns about the infiltration of mototaxis by criminal groups in various neighborhoods and communities across the state. Speaking during the second episode of his program “Armenta Contigo,” he highlighted the risks these informal transport units pose to public safety, as many drivers are unauthorized and linked to illicit activities.

Armenta Mier described the current mototaxi system as “infested” and emphasized that users have no guarantees of protection. He stressed that his administration will not tolerate the threat to families’ safety under the cover of irregular vehicles. As a solution, he presented the Olinia, a 100% Mexican-engineered electric car, as a dignified and peaceful alternative to the traditional mototaxi.

Key points from the governor’s announcement include:
– The Olinia is no longer a distant project but a real and immediate mobility option in Puebla and other states like the State of Mexico.
– The government is preparing a financial and operational plan, coordinated by the secretariats of Mobility and Finance, to acquire an initial batch of 3,000 Olinia units starting next year. These will prioritize institutional mobility and replace transport in critical zones.
– The broader project, originally promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aims to introduce 8,000 electric vehicles in Puebla.
– To encourage adoption, a special fund will cover 20% of the down payment for 5,000 units available to local concessionaires.
– The Olinia Uno model stands out for its high profitability and zero environmental impact, with an operating cost of just 49 cents per kilometer and a commercial price of 150,000 pesos.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize public transport, reduce pollution, and enhance safety in Puebla’s communities. For migrants and residents navigating daily life in the city, the shift from mototaxis to electric vehicles like Olinia could mean safer, cleaner, and more reliable mobility options in the near future.
