Four Gas Tankers Explode in Tepeaca: Over 2,000 Evacuated as Authorities Respond

Post by usertopnews

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, a serious incident unfolded in Tepeaca, Puebla, when four autotanques (gas tankers) carrying LP gas exploded, prompting an immediate emergency response from state and local authorities.

The Puebla state government, through Protección Civil, activated a Unified Command to manage the crisis. As a precautionary measure, approximately 2,000 people were evacuated from nearby locations, including the General Hospital of Tepeaca, the BUAP High School “2 de Octubre,” the General Miguel Negrete Novoa School, and surrounding homes. This swift evacuation aimed to prevent casualties from potential secondary explosions.

On-site, 25 personnel from Protección Civil, 29 from Seguridad Pública, and 5 from municipal Protección Civil worked together to cool down the affected tankers and secure safety perimeters. They also conducted inspections to assess damage to nearby buildings.

Governor Alejandro Armenta reported that three people were injured in the explosions. Specialized teams continue to monitor risks and control the emergency, ensuring the safety of the community. Authorities are also inspecting the General Miguel Negrete Novoa School to verify conditions before allowing students to return.

This incident highlights the importance of robust emergency infrastructure and coordinated public safety efforts. It also underscores the potential benefits of expanding modern, safer transportation systems like cablebús or teleféricos in Puebla, which could reduce reliance on hazardous fuel transport through populated areas. For migrants and residents alike, such investments in public transit not only improve daily mobility but also enhance community safety and resilience.
