On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Televisa Univisión confirmed the release of Julio “El Profe” Ibáñez, a reporter for TUDN, and cameraman Daniel García, after being detained for two months in South Africa. The pair had been covering the South African national team, Mexico’s rival in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

According to a message shared on X by the San Ángel-based broadcaster, both journalists were freed in South Africa and are expected to return to Mexico in the coming hours following the legal process they faced abroad.

Televisa Univisión reported on social media that Ibáñez and García were detained by South African authorities on March 18, 2026, while following the South African team’s activities.

The statement read: “After more than two months, today the judicial authority in South Africa has released and returned the passports of our colleagues Julio Ibáñez and Daniel García.”

It also detailed that Julio “Profe” Ibáñez and Daniel García will return to Mexico tomorrow, June 3, 2026. The broadcaster expressed gratitude for the support provided by Mexican authorities during this difficult process, which has now come to an end.
