SEP announces day off on June 11 for 2026 World Cup opening match

On Monday, June 1, 2026, the Mexican Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) confirmed that there will be no classes on Thursday, June 11, 2026, to coincide with the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico City. This decision was shared by Clara Brugada, Head of Government of Mexico City, who said the SEP “put on the jersey” for Mexico’s first match against South Africa.

The suspension applies exclusively to public schools at the basic, secondary, and upper secondary levels in Mexico City. Mario Delgado, Secretary of Education, informed Brugada about the official class suspension for the day of the World Cup inauguration at the Estadio Ciudad de México.

Brugada emphasized that the break is only for June 11, the day of the opening match. She also revealed plans to watch the game at the FIFA Fan Fest in the Zócalo alongside Mexico City’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

In a gesture promoting women’s participation, both Brugada and Sheinbaum donated their World Cup opening match tickets to a pull-up contest exclusively for women. The tickets were awarded to Yolett Cervantes Cuaquehua from Veracruz and Brianna Ameli Medina Cortés from Iztapalapa.

Regarding other host cities, Brugada noted that Mario Delgado will clarify if class suspensions will extend to Monterrey and Guadalajara. Notably, the Estadio Guadalajara will host its first match on June 11, featuring South Korea vs. Czech Republic, while Estadio Monterrey’s inaugural game is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, between Sweden and Tunisia.

For students and families, this “puente” (long weekend) offers a chance to celebrate Mexico’s World Cup kickoff, but keep an eye out for official announcements about other cities’ school schedules.
