On Thursday, May 28, 2026, Puebla Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier publicly called out José “Pepe” Chedraui Budib, the mayor of Puebla city, for a lack of coordination and support from the municipal government in ongoing road paving and improvement projects led by the state government.
Speaking at a public works event, Armenta directly urged the mayor to increase the deployment of traffic officers to minimize disruptions caused by the extensive paving efforts across the city. “We have 13,000 streets being paved this year. Hire, Pepe, please hire traffic agents, because you need to take care of the traffic in your jurisdiction. It’s causing a lot of problems and people are upset,” the governor said.
Armenta emphasized that the state government is working around the clock on these infrastructure projects but criticized municipalities for insufficient collaboration. “I respectfully ask Pepe Chedraui to send traffic agents—not just when I’m here, but all day—because we are working day and night. We are helping Puebla’s city government and all municipalities. The least we ask is cooperation, but they don’t cooperate at all,” he added.
The direct tone of the governor’s remarks stood out amid one of Puebla’s most ambitious infrastructure programs, which the state government highlights as a major effort to rehabilitate and pave roads throughout the capital.
Defending the project’s cost-efficiency, Armenta explained that the state has reduced expenses by using its own machinery and securing material supplies through partnerships. “Pemex provides some of the stone materials; we pay for the machinery. We have 800 people working, we buy gravel and sand. We deliver roads and works at one-third of the cost,” he stated.
The governor’s comments sparked immediate reactions on social media, where users debated the coordination between the state government and Puebla’s city hall, as well as the traffic disruptions caused by the multiple ongoing roadworks.
