85 Officials and Former Officials Detained for Organized Crime Links Under Sheinbaum Administration

During the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, a total of 85 officials and former officials have been detained for alleged links to organized crime, according to Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). This figure, highlighted by García Harfuch in a press conference from the National Palace, includes at least six sitting municipal presidents who were apprehended while still in office.

García Harfuch emphasized that these arrests reflect a commitment to zero impunity: “This is a commitment to zero impunity and with the conviction that where there are indications and evidence against those who commit crimes, whether they are officials or former officials, they will be investigated and detained.”

Key points from the SSPC’s statement:

– The investigations and arrests have been carried out regardless of the political party affiliation of the suspects. “In these cases, there are people from all parties and all colors,” García Harfuch noted.
– The Sheinbaum administration’s security policy is grounded in combating impunity and corruption.
– Institutional coordination mechanisms have been strengthened, and the intelligence and investigative capacities of the Mexican state have been expanded to act more precisely and effectively against criminal structures.

García Harfuch also detailed that security actions are based on the integration of intelligence, investigation, operations, and permanent territorial deployment. This approach, he said, allows authorities to act promptly, optimize institutional capacities, and generate more effective operations.

“The government of President Claudia Sheinbaum has been firm in the fight against criminal groups. Every day, violent actors are detained, large quantities of weapons and drugs are seized, laboratories are destroyed by the Army and Navy, economic resources are secured, and criminal networks are dismantled,” García Harfuch stated.

For migrants, expats, and those following Mexico’s evolving security landscape, these developments signal a continued focus on institutional reform and a proactive stance against organized crime—regardless of political affiliation.
