A grim discovery unfolded across several municipalities in Zacatecas, where the bodies of ten individuals were found abandoned in public spaces, marking one of the most violent days in the region in recent times. Among the victims were five businesspeople, a former mayor, two government officials, a politician, and a rancher.

The bodies appeared in different locations on Monday, July 20, 2026, including some hanging from a vehicular bridge, others left on roadsides, and one found on a state highway. The municipalities affected were Pánuco, Morelos, and Sain Alto.

Local sources confirmed that Ignacio Castrejón Valdez, the businessman and former mayor of Sombrerete (2016-2018), was among those killed. The state’s Attorney General’s Office is actively investigating the case, with forensic experts and police officers already deployed at the scenes.

Rodrigo Reyes, Zacatecas’ Secretary General of Government, acknowledged the severity of the situation in an official statement. He highlighted that although violent incidents have significantly decreased in recent years thanks to coordinated security efforts, this massacre demands an immediate and forceful response from the state.

To address the crisis, the State Peacebuilding Council has launched an extensive security operation across the affected areas, aiming to apprehend those responsible and reinforce the presence of authorities. Additionally, the Operational Intelligence Group will hold an extraordinary session to closely monitor developments.

Miguel Varela, the current mayor of Zacatecas city, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences for the former mayor’s death. He described the ongoing violence in Mexico and Zacatecas as “very sad” and “indignant,” lamenting the apparent lack of justice and effective responses for victims and their families.

Zacatecas has experienced a complex trajectory in recent years, moving from some of the most violent periods in its history to becoming one of the states with the lowest violence rates. Its strategic geographic location makes it a contested zone for Mexican cartels, which control territories within the state.

Earlier this week, Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), reported that Zacatecas ranked second nationwide in reducing the daily average of intentional homicides during the first half of 2026. According to official crime data consolidated as of June 30, 2026, the state recorded 39 intentional homicides in the first six months of the year.
