The Mexican Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has officially released the 2026-2027 school calendar, setting the schedule for teachers and students across the country. Published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, this calendar is mandatory for all preschool, primary, and secondary schools, both public and private institutions affiliated with the system.
Classes will begin on Monday, August 31, 2026, marking the start of 185 effective school days. However, the end date varies by education level: basic education students will finish on Friday, July 9, 2027, while those in teacher training programs will conclude on Tuesday, July 13, 2027.
Ahead of the school year, teachers will benefit from an additional week off in August. This break, highlighted by President Claudia Sheinbaum as a way to support and value educators, reflects a renewed commitment to the teaching profession within Mexico’s national education system.
The calendar also outlines key breaks and holidays:
– The first pause comes 15 days after classes start, coinciding with Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations.
– Classes will be suspended on November 2 for Day of the Dead and November 16 to commemorate the start of the Mexican Revolution.
– Winter vacation begins Monday, December 21, 2026, with classes resuming Thursday, January 7, 2027.
This structured approach aims to balance academic rigor with cultural observances and rest periods, supporting both students and educators. As Mexico continues to invest in inclusive education policies, such clear planning helps families and teachers prepare for the year ahead.
