Mexico City’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, sent a clear message on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, following the recent arrest and subsequent release of Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, former director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), who faces allegations of violence against his partner.
Speaking from Palacio Nacional during her morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration will not shield any public official or government affiliate who breaks the law, especially in cases involving gender-based violence. “The mere fact of his detention shows that we will never protect anyone who violates the law, especially when it involves violence against women. Regardless of friendships or positions, the law must be upheld,” she stated.
Sheinbaum highlighted that Rodríguez Padilla is currently undergoing legal proceedings focused on reparations to the victim. However, she clarified that the investigation and judicial decisions fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the courts. “It is the responsibility of the Public Ministry and judicial authorities to conduct the investigation and determine legal responsibilities, respecting due process and the rights of the victim,” she added.
This stance reinforces the administration’s commitment to impartiality and accountability, signaling that no public servant will receive special treatment in cases of violence or other crimes. For many, this approach marks a significant step toward addressing systemic impunity and promoting justice for victims of gender violence in Mexico.
