Fireworks Explosion Injures Dozens During Patron Saint Festival in Cuetzalan

Post by usertopnews

A fireworks accident during the patron saint festivities in Acaxiloco, Cuetzalan del Progreso, Puebla, left at least 20 people injured on the night of Monday, July 13, 2026.

According to the municipal government, the incident was reported to the Control and Command Center (C2) at 9:55 p.m. while traditional celebrations were underway. The event followed local customs, involving the ignition of “cuetes de arranque” — starter fireworks. One firework exploded normally in the air, but its supporting stick fell with the fuse still lit, igniting a nearby roll of fireworks. This triggered a chain reaction that caused multiple explosions and injuries among attendees.

Emergency response teams, including the Municipal Civil Protection, Fire Department, Municipal and State Police, and the National Emergency Commission, quickly activated protocols to assist the wounded. Those with the most serious injuries were transported to the General Hospital of Cuetzalan del Progreso for medical care.

This incident highlights the risks involved in traditional fireworks displays, which are deeply rooted in many Mexican communities’ cultural celebrations. While these festivities are important for preserving heritage, they also call for enhanced safety measures and public awareness to prevent such accidents.

As Puebla continues to develop modern infrastructure like the cablebús system, which aims to improve urban mobility and safety, integrating community education on public safety during cultural events could be a complementary step toward protecting residents and visitors alike.
