Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has instructed the Ministry of the Interior to thoroughly review the recent report by the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) concerning the 2014 Ayotzinapa case, which involved the disappearance of 43 students. The report, published last week, sparked controversy for seemingly absolving the Mexican Army as an institution, focusing instead on individual soldiers.

Sheinbaum clarified that several members of the Mexican Army are currently detained and facing legal proceedings related to the events of September 2014. However, she emphasized the key question remains whether these soldiers acted independently—possibly linked to criminal groups—or if the military institution itself was involved.

The president assured that her administration will provide a detailed analysis of the CNDH findings alongside updates on new investigative lines initiated by the Attorney General’s Office during this current government term. She also stressed that the federal government was not involved in the preparation or prior knowledge of the report’s publication, signaling openness to critically assess its conclusions.

Acknowledging the deep wounds this case has left, especially for the families of the disappeared students, Sheinbaum highlighted ongoing communication with the parents and promised to soon present official progress on the investigation. This approach reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing one of Mexico’s most painful human rights crises.
