Israel has shared new intelligence with the United States about a “specific” and fresh Iranian plan to assassinate former President Donald Trump, according to US media reports on Thursday. This revelation comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following recent attacks that have raised fears of escalating conflict.
According to CNN, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, US agencies have been monitoring a steady flow of intelligence on potential threats against Trump for weeks. However, one source emphasized that the warning delivered by Israel this week detailed a new and concrete plot. Another source told CNN that while the US had previously received reports of possible assassination plans, the information from Israel added critical new elements about a specific threat.
The Wall Street Journal also published a similar report based on unidentified sources.
The animosity from Tehran toward Trump dates back to January 2020, when then-President Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad. Since then, Iranian authorities have vowed revenge.
So far, no further details have emerged about the alleged assassination plan.
AFP reached out to the White House for comment on these reports. An official, speaking anonymously, referred to Trump’s own remarks made on Wednesday during his flight back from Turkey. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, “They want to take out the leader of the United States. I’m on every list. This morning I saw I’m on every one of their lists.”
The president also drew attention for his choice of aircraft on the return trip. Instead of flying on the new plane gifted by Qatar, he sent that aircraft ahead to the UK and boarded his old Air Force One to complete the journey. This decision sparked speculation about security concerns, especially given the recent US strikes against Iran and Turkey’s proximity to Iranian territory.
Later, The New York Times reported that the switch was made at the request of the US Secret Service “as a security measure.”
For migrants and international residents in Mexico and beyond, this episode underscores the fragile and volatile nature of global politics today. It also highlights how intelligence sharing between allies can play a crucial role in preventing potential threats. The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran continue to shape international relations, with implications that ripple far beyond their borders.
