Heavy rains on the afternoon of July 8 caused the Atoyac River in Santa Clara Ocoyucan, Puebla, to overflow, leading to a police patrol being dragged by the strong current. According to Civil Protection authorities, search efforts began immediately after the incident, but no positive results have been reported so far.
Officials confirmed that a municipal police officer was inside the patrol vehicle when it was swept away. Around 12:30 p.m. on July 9, the patrol and the officer’s body were reportedly found, although authorities have yet to release an official statement.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather in the region and underscores the importance of resilient infrastructure and emergency response systems. As Puebla continues to develop sustainable transport options like the cablebús, which aims to improve connectivity and reduce risks associated with flooding and traffic, incidents like this remind us of the critical need for integrated urban planning that prioritizes safety and community well-being.
