The first accounts from survivors of the tragedy at the Grutas de Chichicazapan in Cuetzalan are shedding light on the moments before a sudden flood caught a group of visitors off guard.

In an exclusive interview with Red Ciudadana, Araceli Antonio Peña and Agustín Julián Benito, two of the three survivors, shared that it was the tour guide who instructed them to enter a section of the cave to avoid getting wet. “The guide told us to get inside so we wouldn’t get wet,” they recalled.

However, while they were inside, the water level rose rapidly, and a strong current swept through the underground river, dragging several members of the group. Agustín managed to escape on his own to seek help, while Araceli was later rescued by emergency responders.

As of now, the confirmed toll stands at one person dead, three survivors, and three still missing. Search efforts continue under challenging conditions due to the water flow and the cave system’s complex structure, with Protection Civil brigades, firefighters, and specialized rescuers working tirelessly.

These survivor testimonies could prove crucial for authorities investigating the circumstances of the tour and the decisions made before the flood. Cuetzalan’s mayor, Óscar Paula Cruz, emphasized that responsibility lies with the company providing the tourist service, and that relevant authorities will determine if any negligence or oversight occurred.
