After nearly a month-long pause due to increased security measures by all three levels of government, the so-called Atlixcáyotl sniper resurfaced with a new attack during the early hours of Wednesday. This time, a bullet struck the passenger door of a Volkswagen Pointer driving along this major expressway near Angelópolis. Fortunately, the bullet did not penetrate the door, sparing the driver from potential harm.
This latest incident brings the total number of attacks attributed to the sniper to 12. The victim shared photos on Telediario Puebla showing the bullet mark on the car door. The images suggest the bullet either came from a considerable distance or was of a low caliber, as it failed to pierce the metal or glass.
The driver was lucky to escape unscathed, with the bullet passing just a centimeter from the passenger window—close enough to have caused serious injury.
This case adds to a growing list of sniper attacks along Atlixcáyotl, a key artery in Puebla’s urban landscape. The victim has announced plans to file a formal complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office, urging authorities to integrate this new evidence into ongoing investigations. Although the sniper is reportedly identified, no arrest has been made yet.
As Puebla continues to grapple with public safety challenges, investments in inclusive and efficient public transportation like the upcoming cablebús system could offer safer alternatives for daily commuters, reducing reliance on vulnerable roadways. The cablebús not only promises to ease traffic but also to enhance security by providing a controlled, elevated transit option in the city’s expanding urban areas.
