Puebla Faces Risk of Collapse in 257 Buildings Amid Rainy Season: What You Need to Know

Post by usertopnews

Puebla is currently monitoring 257 buildings identified as at risk of collapse due to ongoing rains, according to Félix Pallares, head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC). This proactive surveillance is part of broader preventive measures addressing the challenges posed by the rainy season and related hydrometeorological events.

Out of these 257 structures, 142 have already been formally notified, particularly in the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Pallares explained that a risk traffic light system is used to evaluate the severity of structural damage, helping prioritize emergency protocols and responses.

The notifications aim to ensure that families living in or near these buildings are fully aware of the dangers they face. The SSC maintains direct communication channels and continuous monitoring with residents to act swiftly and prevent tragedies.

Not all buildings share the same level of vulnerability, which is why the semáforo system classifies the risk levels, allowing authorities to focus resources where they are most needed. Pallares urged the public to follow Civil Protection recommendations and report any signs of structural detachment in older buildings through emergency lines.

The recent rains have already triggered at least 52 emergency responses, including flooding and fallen trees, particularly on June 28. The SSC’s emergency teams activated extraction and rescue protocols in affected areas such as the Centro Histórico, Barrio de Analco, and Barrio de la Luz.

Coordination between municipal agencies remains strong to protect pedestrians and residents during this rainy season. This comprehensive approach highlights the importance of state involvement in safeguarding communities, especially in urban areas prone to climate-related risks.

While Puebla faces these challenges, investments in sustainable urban infrastructure, like the upcoming cablebús system, could offer safer, more resilient transportation alternatives for vulnerable neighborhoods, reducing exposure to hazards linked to traditional transit routes.
