In a shocking incident that unfolded on Saturday in Toledo, Argentina, a flight instructor named Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, 42, jumped out of a moving Cessna 150, leaving his 22-year-old student, Rosario, to land the plane solo. Bertazzo died instantly upon impact with the ground, according to a statement released by the local prosecutor’s office on Tuesday.
Rosario recounted that before the jump, Bertazzo calmly told her, “You know what you have to do, keep going,” then removed his headphones and seatbelt, opened the door, and leapt from the aircraft. Despite the trauma and shock, she managed to safely land the plane without any damage, a remarkable feat given the circumstances.
Eduardo Álvarez, director of Flying Parrot Córdoba—the flight school where Bertazzo worked—expressed disbelief over the event. He noted there were no signs that Bertazzo had planned such an action, especially since he had flown earlier that day with another student. “He made this tragic decision onboard with someone else beside him,” Álvarez said. “It’s impossible to understand, but the human mind is very complex.”
Álvarez also highlighted the difficulty of opening a plane door mid-flight, comparing it to trying to open a car door traveling at 200 kilometers per hour, underscoring the extraordinary nature of Bertazzo’s jump.
Bertazzo was an experienced pilot and instructor, having also worked in Chile. His colleagues remember him as “a wonderful person with a great smile,” making the incident all the more unexpected.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. For those learning to fly or interested in aviation safety, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable challenges pilots may face—and the resilience required to overcome them.
