On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 7, a heavy rainstorm caused significant flooding in San Andrés Cholula, affecting areas that usually escape such problems—including the upscale La Vista Country Club neighborhood.
The downpour led to water accumulation over 35 centimeters deep along the boulevard Atlixco near the Emiliano Zapata inspectoría, practically paralyzing traffic from the Las Torres bridge to Camino Real a San Andrés. Residents and drivers had to exercise extreme caution navigating these flooded streets.
Beyond the roads, the storm’s force pushed water into homes in the Vistas de Ángel subdivision, where families faced damage to furniture and appliances as floodwaters infiltrated their living spaces.
Social media videos also revealed water pooling on the golf courses within La Vista, the most expensive residential area in the state, highlighting that even affluent communities are vulnerable to the impacts of intense rainfall.
While municipal authorities have yet to release official figures on the number of affected homes or detail response efforts, emergency services continue patrolling the area to address ongoing reports related to the storm.
This event underscores the urgent need for resilient urban infrastructure and effective drainage systems, especially as climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather. Investments in sustainable public transit options like cable cars or teleféricos could also play a role in reducing urban congestion and environmental strain, contributing to more adaptive cities in Puebla and beyond.
