Puebla’s Governor Seeks Clarity on Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz Passenger Train Project Amid Uncertainty

Post by usertopnews

On Monday, July 6, 2026, Puebla’s governor Alejandro Armenta addressed growing concerns about the future of the Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz passenger train, a project recently omitted from the federal government’s strategic program published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación.

During his morning press conference, Armenta urged caution against jumping to conclusions about the project’s cancellation this sexenio. He emphasized that previous meetings with federal infrastructure officials confirmed the railway extension to Puebla remains part of the national planning.

As the train is a federal initiative, Armenta clarified that the timing and budget execution fall under federal jurisdiction. Still, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborate fully with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s development agenda.

The governor announced plans to formally request the official document from the Agencia de Trenes y Transporte Público Integrado (ATTRAPI) that excludes the Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz route. He stressed that the overall railway expansion plan is not yet finalized and that the government remains open to incorporating regional priorities.

This statement comes weeks after ATTRAPI awarded a 13.3 million peso consultancy contract to URS Corporation México to assess the technical feasibility of the passenger train route and its compatibility with heavy freight traffic.

Despite federal limits on expanding rail lines to 3,300 kilometers focused on other regions, Armenta expressed confidence in securing the project’s inclusion before the 2030 deadline. He highlighted ongoing technical studies as key support for Puebla’s case.

Closing his remarks, the governor quoted President Sheinbaum’s openness to including projects like this one: “Our President is always willing to incorporate projects she has mentioned. So, let’s not jump to conclusions before things are clear.”

For Puebla and its residents, the Mexico-Puebla-Veracruz train represents more than infrastructure—it’s a potential catalyst for regional connectivity, economic growth, and social inclusion. As discussions continue, the state’s leadership remains vigilant in advocating for this vital link in Mexico’s transportation future.
