On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will present a detailed report on the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, following a recent investigative report that raised questions about the official version of events and suggested possible involvement of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the operation.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the presentation will also include participation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Legal Counsel Office of the Presidency. Their goal is to reconstruct the timeline and clarify the roles of the authorities involved.
“I asked the FGR to come and inform what then-Attorney General Gertz Manero said, what is documented in the investigation files from that time, what the U.S. ambassador communicated in letters, and what is now acknowledged, as well as how things unfolded,” Sheinbaum explained.
She emphasized the case’s significance not only because Zambada is a wanted drug lord in Mexico but also due to its implications for national sovereignty. The Mexican government aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the capture and address allegations that the Sinaloa Cartel received protection in the United States, despite being designated a terrorist organization by that country.
Sheinbaum stressed that resolving the case is crucial “for the good of Mexico and the bilateral relationship.” She reiterated that fighting organized crime must not justify interference or subordination, and that cooperation between Mexico and the U.S. should be based on mutual respect and equality.
This development comes amid ongoing debates about cross-border security collaboration and Mexico’s sovereignty, highlighting the delicate balance between international cooperation and national autonomy.
