England Chooses Pumas’ Cantera as Training Ground Ahead of Mexico World Cup Clash

England’s national team will train at the Cantera facilities, home to Mexico City’s Pumas UNAM, as they prepare for their Round of 16 match against Mexico in the 2026 World Cup.

Luis Raúl González, president of Pumas, confirmed this during a press conference about the club’s new strategic partnership with the sports brand Puma. He highlighted that the excellent condition of the Cantera pitches was a key factor in England’s decision.

“Indeed, the English team will train here. We had already mentioned it, and given the high maintenance level of our fields, they were selected. This confirms what was being said,” González stated.

This week, the Cantera fields are free since Pumas’ first team is currently in Cancún for preseason ahead of the Apertura 2026 tournament, ensuring no scheduling conflicts with England’s training sessions.

England is set to arrive in Mexico City between Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, to begin their camp and get ready for the crucial match against Mexico on Sunday, July 5, at 6:00 p.m. local time at Estadio Ciudad de México. This marks England’s return to a World Cup in Mexico after 40 years—the last time they played here was in June 1986 during the quarterfinals against Argentina.

The Cantera, located in Colonia Ajusco, Alcaldía Coyoacán, was inaugurated on October 29, 1997, and spans 20 hectares. Beyond its well-maintained pitches and green areas, the facility is notable for its privacy, featuring three levels that extend up to 35 meters below Mexico City’s streets.

For fans and residents alike, England’s choice of Cantera underscores the value of investing in quality sports infrastructure that supports international events and promotes Mexico City as a hub for world-class athletic preparation.
